Diabetic Retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects eyes, is caused by damage to the blood vessels at the back of the eye (the retina). This can develop whether you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic.
The longer you have diabetes, the more likely you are to develop this eye disease. The less controlled your sugar is, the more likely you are to develop this eye disease. Often, the early stages of diabetic retinopathy have no symptoms. As the condition progresses, you may develop:
*floaters (spots or dark strings floating in your vision)
*blurred vision
*fluctuating vision
*dark or empty areas in your vision
*vision loss.
The best way to prevent vision loss...manage your diabetes! Annual eye examinations should be part of your care. We'll talk more about diabetic retinopathy this month.
